Colonialism is the biggest act of terrorism the world has ever experienced.
Colonialism as defined by Merriam Webster is the policy or practice of acquiring full or
partial political control over another country, occupying it with settlers, and exploiting it
economically. The continent of Africa has undoubtedly experienced colonialism and its
aftermath in a negative way.
Terrorism? Yes, Terrorism. Terrorism is defined as the unlawful use of violence and instillation of fear and intimidation against civilians, in the pursuit of political/social aims. Media outlets play a
pivotal role in how people consume information. This is one of the many reasons why this
series is being done. The ability to make informed decisions based on objective information is
something that I am extremely passionate about. Media outlets and propaganda videos
displayed as documentaries circulate throughout the world without fact checking the historical
events in question. This has debilitated and crippled the way in which humans interact with
each other and how certain people are viewed. The other problem with fact checking
information is that the person and entity fact checking the information matters. History has
proven to us that there’s a difference between telling the truth and displaying a narrative you
want people to believe. The ability to differentiate objective and/or subjective information
needs to be discussed, learned and applied.
Colonialism has had lasting effects on the African continent and African people. Most
people would hear the colonialism and think of it as an ancient issue that no longer applies to
today’s world. However, neo-colonialism exists which makes colonialism a current problem, not
one of the pasts. Colonialism was fueled by European, English and United States imperial and
capitalist greed for the most part. This greed turned into the enslavement and dehumanization
of Africans up until present day.
This continual (yes, it is continual because none of the 54 countries within Africa is truly
independent) enslavement and dehumanization of Africans leads me to this next point.
Organizations such as The United Nations claim to “aid” countries within the African continent.
It is responsible for aiding and embedding in the starving of people that are from “third
world” countries. The irony of the entire situation is that the same money that’s being sent to
“aid” countries on the continent of Africa is the same money and/or resources that’s being
stolen. The peoples’ whose resources are being stolen do not receive any pecuniary
compensation and/or control over their own resources. Yet, they are considered
“underdeveloped” and “third world countries.” The same way that countries within Africa
cannot call themselves independent is the same way those who have colonized Africa are
entirely and unreservedly dependent on Africa to function. Are you getting a gist as to why
colonialism is the biggest act of terrorism to date? Did this challenge your ideology/beliefs?
Expect betrayal, how the world bank won’t get off our necks, assassinations in Africa in the next
part of Colonialism is the biggest act of terrorism series.
